In the challenge “Play by Wire” at the Eclipse SDV Hackathon 2024 we implemented an SDV architecture using open-source tools provided by Eclipse on top of a hardware architecture resembling a zonal E/E vehicle architecture.
With this SDV architecture abstract interfaces could be used to easily forward data from the low-level electronic control units (ECUs) reading sensor data and controlling actuators via the zonal control unit (ZCU) aggregating all the required information to the high-performance computer (HPC) that represents the infotainment system within a vehicle. The game Pong was implemented as a game that could be played by using sensor inputs coming from a joystick or from a wireless input device, which corresponds to re-using the vehicle hardware (e.g. volume controls) to actually play a game on the infotainment screen inside the car. The HPC could indicate the current score and the winner of the game by showing different colors on an LED strip, which resembles the interior lighting of vehicles.
We achieved this by leveraging the advantages of an SDV architecture that allows for the quick and easy integration of different workloads in the architecture. By this, the forwarding of data from the ECUs via the ZCU to the HPC and vice-versa could be easily realized using containerized applications handling the forwarding of data on top of the SDV architecture below providing the required base functionalities, such as container orchestration as well as middleware that supports the forwarding of data between different containers in the SDV architecture.
