Functional Safety & Cybersecurity

Introduction

Demonstrator vehicles typically do not comply with functional safety standards mandatory for serial production vehicles. However, functional safety remains crucial for demonstrators. FEV.io has defined a simplified process to ensure safety in these applications.

Background

FEV.io was contracted by a European engine manufacturer to ensure the functional safety of a hydrogen-powered prototype combustion engine, intended for various applications such as excavators and gensets.

Approach

FEV.io applied its prototype functional safety process, which includes:

  • Definition of the item (system boundary, function description)
  • Hazard analysis
  • Risk assessment and mitigation
  • Establishment of traceability between features, hazards, and safety measures
  • Verification of these measures

Impact

By applying FEV.io’s prototype safety processes, based on standards such as ISO 12100 and ISO 13849, we achieved:

  • A sufficient level of functional safety for the prototype application
  • Comprehensive documentation of the functional safety development
  • Inclusion of UNECE R134 design requirements
